Deve Gowda: Third Front will try to form government

Janata Dal (Secular) president H.D. Deve Gowda on Friday said the Third Front would try to form a government at the Centre with the support of a few more parties.

“Since we may not be able to form the government on our own, we will seek the support of other parties,” he said but did not name them.

Talking to The Hindu from Bangalore, Mr. Gowda, said he was in regular touch with CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat and CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan discussing the political developments…More

Will Deve Gowda dump his son again?

Former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy has done it again. At a time, when his father Deve Gowda is focusing all his energy and time on reviving the Third Front, his son Kumaraswamy’s meeting with UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi has raised many an eyebrow in political circles, both in Delhi and Karnataka, on the “dependable” quotient of the Gowda clan.

It is no secret that Kumaraswamy had been maintaining a parallel connection with the Congress even while the patriarch was struggling to put up a united Third Front by talking to all and sundry at the national level. Even before the Lok Sabha poll dates were announced, the former CM “on an invitation from Sonia” had met and held talks for a possible prepoll pact with the Congress…More..

Deve Gowda’s sphinx-like silence baffling

The studied silence being maintained by JD(S) supremo and former prime minister H D Deve Gowda in the last few days has dismayed political observers.Since the end of polling on May 30, Gowda, who took the lead in the formation of the Third Front, has kept himself away from the media glare.

He has hardly participated in campaigning, either for his own party candidates in other states or for the Third Front constituents. He has also refrained from commenting on political developments. This has raised many eyebrows among those conversant with the nature of Gowda.

According to sources, Gowda is quiet as he is keenly watching the situation. “Even though Gowda is backing the Third Front, he has kept his options open. The master strategist that he is, Gowda is weighing all options. After May 16, if the Third Front fails to muster majority or the Congress emerges as the single largest party and falls short of a majority, he will throw his weight behind the Congress,” the sources indicated…More

Third Front in crisis-Congress to woo Naveen after getting Deve Gowda

Just four days ahead of counting of votes, the Third Front mooted by Left and Telugu Desam party seems to be in crisis, as one after one of its possible allies are turning towards major formations of NDA and UPA.

While it was NDA’s day when TRS from Andhra Pradesh joined its rally in Ludhiana ditching Third Front, former Prime Minister Deve Gowda’s son and former Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumara Swamy had a meeting with AICC President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, as her residence on Tuesday.

According to political circles, Kumara Swamy had conveyed a message from his father expressing desire that his party JD(S) and Congress should work together in Karnataka, giving a big fight to BJP…More

A chronicle of failed Third Fronts in past

A new trend is emerging in the political movements just as the General Elections draw nearer. Smaller parties have begun shunning national-level giants such as the Congress and the BJP to join another alliance now called the third front.

This has made the possibility of a third front government at the centre very real, which is in fact a repeat of what happened in 1996.

Here’s a brief recap of the other ‘third front’ experiments in the past - all of which failed to provide stable governments….More..
