Third Front, BSP to meet on May 18
With reports of cracks in the Third Front, leaders of the non-Congress, non-BJP parties, including BSP, will meet here on May 18 to discuss the possibility of forming an alternative secular government.
TRS, which switched to the NDA side three days ago, has not been called for the meeting, CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat said on Wednesday.
“Leaders of non-Congress, non-BJP will meet here on May 18 to decide the future course of action. BSP will join these discussions where we will explore the possibilities of forming an alternative secular government,” he told reporters here. ..More

Karat & Mayawati worried about Chandrababu Naidu ditching Third Front
With the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) joining the BJP-led NDA, jittery Third Front leaders rang up Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday night to ensure that the latter remains with them.
According t o TDP sources, CPM general secretary Prakash Karat and Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) chief and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati spoke to Naidu separately. Maywati can play on all fronts: UPA, NDA, Third Front
If Congress is forgetting the bitterness to plump for SP in a haste, it is also because Mulayam Singh is expected to be more dependable as a coalition partner if only because of the limited options he has. The SP boss cannot have an overt partnership with BJP while he is wary of Third Front, which he sees as a packed house of ambitious satraps, and is critically dependent on Congress. A Third Front, without Mayawati, can be an option but not that attractive.
Mayawati is just the opposite. The Dalit maverick can play on all power fronts — UPA, Third Front and NDA.
With a good number in her bag, she is likely to first explore the leadership option with Third Front — her best bet as Congress and BJP would be scared of ceding a key leadership position to her for fear of its impact on their dalit and Brahmin votebanks nationally.
